What Goes Before Artificial Grass for Playgrounds?

When it comes to spaces that kids use, we don’t compromise here at Realturf USA. We take our time creating a secure and stable foundation for our artificial turf for playground use. Curious about the process? Here’s a a preview of how we tackle this process:

Assessing the Installation Site

The first step when planning an artificial grass installation for playgrounds is conducting a thorough assessment of the installation site. We evaluate existing drainage, grade changes, soil compaction, and the presence of weeds or debris. Identifying potential issues in advance allows time to implement solutions like grading, adding fill dirt, or weed control. Attempting installation on an improper site will likely result in an uneven playground surface or drainage problems once the turf is down.

Weed and Pest Control

It’s imperative to eradicate weeds, ants, grubs, and other pests before installation. These organisms can grow up through turf backing and blades, creating unsightly bumps and holes. Pesticides or natural sprays should be applied weeks in advance per product instructions. The site should also be cleared of all vegetation, rocks, and roots using a tractor, shovel, or commercial-grade weed trimmer depending on site conditions.

Establishing a Stable Base

Quality base materials are vital for playground turf durability. Typical options include crushed stone, decomposed granite, or washed concrete sand. These non-cohesive materials pack tightly to form a stable subsurface yet still facilitate drainage. Base depth is determined by the site, but generally a minimum of 3 inches is recommended under turf for playgrounds.

Accommodating Playground Equipment

The layout of slides, swings, and structures impacts turf installation. For instance, seams should not run underneath permanent equipment. The sub-base and turf may need extra reinforcement to withstand repeated equipment forces. Realturf’s design team can help you create a fully integrated floor plan if necessary.

Choosing the Right Artificial Grass Product

With so many turf products available, it’s essential to choose one designed specifically for playground applications. At Realturf USA, all of our playground turf for backyard and commercial use meet strict guidelines for safety, flammability, and lead content. That also goes for all accessories like our shock pads and infill.
